Daventry district's commemorations of the outbreak of the First World War recognised by Imperial War Museum

The council and its partners led on a number of initiatives to mark the centenary in 2014, with the support of parishes and local community groups.

Activities included interactive presentations at Danetre and Southbrook Learning Village (DSLV), a centenary fete and sports day in Daventry, and the Big Poppy Plant, which saw free poppy seeds handed out to communities across the district.

DDC has now been made a member of the First World War Centenary Partnership Programme by Imperial War Museums in recognition of its contribution to the global commemorations.

The programme brings together organisations across the world to encourage people to understand the impact of the First World War by taking part in projects and events.

Cllr Chris Millar, leader of daventry district council, said: “We are proud to have received this certificate to highlight our contribution to the programme of First World War commemorations which took place across the world.

“We would like to thank everyone who supported our activities, which provided an opportunity for us all to reflect upon the sacrifice of those who fought and died for this country a century ago.

“We will begin discussions next year in order to plan a further programme of activities for 2018, the centenary of the war’s end - something I’m sure people in Daventry district will be equally keen to commemorate.”
