The Play’s the Thng at William Parker School

ALL the world’s will be a stage - well, William Parker School in Daventry - when a Shakespeare classic will be performed there later this week.

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) will be performing a version of Hamlet designed for a younger audience. It will be shown on Thursday, September 8.

Head of English at the school, Michelle Thresher, said: “We are delighted and excited to be hosting the RSC and to offer a unique experience for our local community.

“This production of Hamlet is innovative, exciting and very accessible – it’s a great opportunity for families to enjoy a Shakespeare play in a highly engaging way.”

Dharmesh Patel, pictured right, takes on the title role while Debbie Korley stars as Ophelia.

The show is the continua-tion of the links between the RSC and the school which has been running for the past four years. The school was part of the RSC’s learning and performance network between 2007 and 2010 while the RSC’s education department has worked with the staff at William Parker and help it become a leading school in teaching the Bard’s work.

The production is the start of a project designed to find new ways of reaching audiences who may not normally have access to the RSC’s work. In schools the daytime performances will be for the children, with evening performances aimed at their families and the local community.

Director of education at the RSC said: “The YPS Hamlet tour is the fulfilment of a long held company ambition to take our work on the road and into schools and communities that would otherwise rarely get the chance to see it.

“It also demonstrates our commitment to excellence in the teaching, learning and performance of Shakespeare’s plays. Most importantly of all, the work is being promoted by the schools and venues who know their communities best.”

The show starts at 6.30pm, Tickets for the show cost £10 for over 18s and £5 for under 18s. They can be bought by visiting the school in Ashby Road between 9am and 4pm from today (Monday) to Wednesday.
