New season of treats

There will be a veritable feast of top comedy, drama and musicals in the new season at Royal and Derngate in Northampton.

Former Stars in their Eyes host Matthew Kelly will be appearing in To Sir, With Love, brought to the stage by the theatre’s in house production team.

It tells the story of Ricky Braithwaite, an ex-RAF fighter pilot who discovers the reality of life as a black man in post war England. It runs from September 6 to 28.

In other drama, Agatha Christie’s Go Back For Murder stars Liza Goddard and Lysette Anthony and is a classic whodunnit surrounding the murder of a woman’s father. It runs from October 21 to 26.

For fans of classic drama, a stage adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic Mansfield Park comes to the stage from October 28 to November 2. The play sees young Fanny Price, uprooted from her home and living through one crisis after another.

Musical fans will be in for a treat as they can relive some of their favourite memories. Cats, the classic and record breaking Andrew Lloyd Webber show comes to Northampton on September 30 to October 5.

The music of the king of pop Michael Jackson will be bought to life with Thriller Live. All of the smash hits including Billie Jean, Beat It and, of course, Thriller, will be in the show, which runs from October 28 to November 2.

From classic pop to old fashioned rock and roll Buddy, the story of Buddy Holly, will be performed from November 11 to 16. The show features classic songs such as That’ll Be The Day, Johnny B. Goode and Peggy Sue.

There will be a top range of comedians and comedy shows coming up before Christmas.

Appearing on September 18 is the king of dead-pan, Jack Dee, while the radio version of Douglas Adams’ Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, featuring the original cast, comes alive on September 21.

Ventriloquist Nina Conti will be bringing her unique show which refuses to go as rehearsed. She brings her daughter, her handyman and her oldest friend on October 10.

This is followed by An Evening of Bobby Davro. The veteran comedian, who soared to fame in the ’80s, will be tickling funnybones on October 12.

8 Out Of 10 Cats regular Sean Lock will present his show, Purple Van Man, on October 18, while the irrepressible Lee Nelson comes to Northampton on October 23.

Have I Got News For You captain Paul Merton comes to Royal & Derngate on November 5.

Father Ted actor Ardal O’Hanlon will be talking about a wide range of subjects in his show on November 13.

A regular on Radio 4 and panel show QI, Sandi Toksvig brings a witty evening of stand up to the theatre on November 15.

Another Irish comic, Ed Byrne, will bring his new show the Roaring Forties to Northampton on November 21. The final comedian prior to Christmas is Al Murray, The Pub Landlord bringing his tour The Only Way is Epic to the theatre on November 22.
