Video nasty to inspire Saints against Gloucester

Jamie Elliott has revealed Saints have used a ‘brutal’ review of the defeat at Exeter as inspiration for Saturday’s showdown with Gloucester.

The young wing was part of the Northampton team that was systematically dismantled during a devastating opening 32 minutes at Sandy Park last weekend.

Saints, who had gone 22-0 down, eventually went on to lose 28-19, a defeat that cost them a place in the LV= Cup semi-finals.

Jim Mallinder’s men now need a huge effort to get a win against the Cherry and Whites this weekend, as they aim to keep their hopes of a Premiership play-off place alive.

And wing Elliott said: “Monday, as a team, we did the review. It was very brutal on people missing tackles.

“We definitely took that into training this week and we’re looking forward to this game on Saturday.”

Elliott was this week shortlisted for the LV= Cup Breakthrough Player of 2012/13 award, was given a tough time by Exeter wing Watisoni Votu suring last Saturday’s defeat.

He will start against Gloucester this afternoon hoping for an improved showing, and the 20-year-old admits he still has plenty to learn.

“I feel like I need to push on a bit now, push on and be more assertive,” he said. “There’s definitely room for improvement.

“I’m still only 20 and still trying to play. It’s good to have competition around. Ken Pisi is back now so there’s a lot about.”

Saints will now pour everything they have into their assault on the Premiership as they are out of Europe and the LV= Cup.

And Elliott feels the fact his team can get rest while sides such as Leicester, Saracens and Harlequins are preoccupied with other competitions will prove beneficial.

“We’d love to fight on all three fronts, but as it is we’re only in one,” he said. “That’s the focus now so we can put everything into that.

“There will be a few weeks off, with the LV= Cup and the Heineken Cup, so we can get a lot of rest in the team.

“It’s sort of a strength and a weakness; strength being that we get to recover and weakness being that we’re not playing. We can’t get distracted. We have to be focused.”
