In their first game, they were routed 50-5 by Gloucester, leading to a plate semi-final against East Midlands rivals Leicester.

In monsoon conditions, the Tigers ran out 21-12 winners to conclude a disappointing night for the Franklin’s Gardens youngsters.

Gloucester scored eight tries in the opening game to simply blow Saints away, with substitute Will Allman’s try the only cause for any celebration.

The contest against the Tigers was much closer, with Rory Hutchinson dotting down and Teimana Harrison scoring a breakaway try to put the Saints in command of the game.

But Leicester scored three converted tries in the second half to conclude a dreadful evening for the men from Northampton.
