Lawes was man of the match in the 29-18 success at Twickenham on Sunday, which kept Stuart Lancaster’s side in contention for the Six Nations title.

They travel to Italy on Saturday needing to win and hoping Ireland slip up in France.

And Lawes is eager to use last weekend’s superb success as a catalyst for great things this weekend and beyond, with a home World Cup on the horizon.

“We need to be switched on from the off in Italy, but the win against Wales has given us a lot of confidence,” said the influential lock.

“The World Cup is a long way away but we are playing some good rugby and there is lots of young guys involved in the side. We need to push on and show the world what we can do.

“But we have to make sure that we do not get ahead of ourselves.”

Lawes’ Northampton team-mate Luther Burrell scored in the win against Wales, while Dylan Hartley and Tom Wood also started.

Lee Dickson came off the bench on a good day for England against Warren Gatland’s team, which included Saints star George North.
