Saints lock Day’s injury not as bad as first feared

Assistant coach Alan Dickens says the injury Christian Day sustained at Exeter last weekend is not as bad as first feared.

But the influential lock will play no part in this weekend’s game against Worcester Warriors.

Day was withdrawn after just 32 minutes of last Saturday’s 17-16 success at Sandy Park, with GJ van Velze coming off the bench to call the lineout.

Saints will be keen to get Day back as soon as possible, as he has been one of the players of the season so far.

And Dickens said: “He’s a lot better than we first thought. It’s a bang. All the X-rays have been clear, so it’s positive.

“The medical staff are working on him and it’s positive.

“Christian has been very consistent this year and he’s been an important player in the side week in, week out.”

Another key man who is hopeful of returning from injury sooner rather than later is Ben Foden.

The England full-back, who suffered a knee injury against Newcastle in November, had tweeted that he was hoping to be back for this weekend’s game.

And although he has not quite made it back in time, Dickens said: “Ben’s another one who’s been in the physio room this week, and we’ll have to wait and see with him.

“If it was up to Ben Foden, he would have been playing six weeks ago because he’s a competitive player who wants to play.”
