Saints flanker Clark’s Six Nations injury scare

Saints flanker Calum Clark could be a doubt for the start of England’s Six Nations campaign after picking up a shoulder injury at Glasgow on Saturday.

The back row forward was forced off the field during the first half of Northampton’s 27-20 defeat at Scotstoun.

It was later confirmed he had suffered an AC joint problem, with Saints boss Jim Mallinder saying ‘he’s done a bit of damage there’.

And after assessing Clark’s injury, England opted to call up Worcester’s Matt Kvesic as cover ahead of the opening Six Nations fixture against Scotland on February 2.

“Calum’s certainly got a very sore shoulder,” said Mallinder after the game in Glasgow. “It looks like he’s done a bit of damage there.”

“It’s his AC joint so it’s very sore, he’s in a sling at the moment.”

Clark’s England team-mate Courtney Lawes also suffered an injury at Glasgow, leaving the field during the second half.

But Mallinder does not feel there is any need to worry about the lock’s fitness.

He said: “Courtney’s not too bad. He took a bit of a bang to the head and his shoulder. It’s a bit of a stinger, but hopefully he’ll be fine.”
