Saints boss Mallinder hopeful Hartley injury is not serious

Jim Mallinder is hopeful that the shoulder injury Dylan Hartley picked up against Leicester won’t rule the Saints skipper out for a prolonged period.

England star Hartley was forced off in the 33rd minute of Saturday’s 22-16 defeat and later had his right arm in a sling.

Saints are remaining upbeat about his fitness, though Mallinder could not be sure how long his player would be out for.

“He banged his shoulder and we’ll have to see how he is,” said the director of rugby. “He’s a tough lad so he won’t have gone off for a scratch.

“We’ll have to see what damage he’s done.

“We’ll have to have him checked out and hopefully he’s not done anything too serious.”

Mallinder is optimistic about the fitness of Stephen Myler, who has missed the past three games with a hamstring injury.

Glenn Dickson and Will Hooley have filled in during his absence, but the fly-half could be back for Thursday’s Amlin Challenge Cup quarter-final game at Sale Sharks.

“Myler should be fit for the next game so we’ll look forward to him coming back,” said Mallinder.
