The 33-year-old is contracted at Franklin's Gardens until the summer of 2022 but he will exit a year earlier than planned to pursue a new opportunity, at the Hurricanes.

Franks will not play for Saints again as he is out for the rest of the season with a foot injury sustained back in February.

It means he will leave the club having made just 24 appearances after arriving from the Crusaders in the summer of 2019.

Saints had high hopes for Franks, who won two World Cups with New Zealand, racking up a massive 108 caps for his country.

However, he has not been able to cement a regular starting spot in Northampton.

Despite that, Saints boss Chris Boyd has nothing but good wishes for the departing tighthead prop.

“The pandemic has been difficult for everyone, but even more so for those living a long way from their family and close friends - I know that first hand,” Boyd said.

“So, while of course we are disappointed to see Owen leave Northampton, we understand his decision to return to New Zealand with his family, and did not want to stand in his way.

“I want to thank Owen for everything he has done as a Saint; his playing time this season has unfortunately been limited due to injury, but he remains a consummate professional and his experience has been invaluable around our young group - particularly amongst our front rowers - so we wish him the best for the future.”
