Boyd explains why Biggar wasn't taking place kicks for Saints against Ulster

Biggar had been nursing an injury that forced him to miss matches against Worcester Warriors and the Dragons, with James Grayson starting both games.

But Biggar was back in from the start for the Challenge Cup quarter-final against Ulster on Saturday night.

The Wales star was not on kicking duties from the tee though, as Piers Francis was given the nod to notch the points.

Saints eventually lost 35-27 to Ulster, who booked their place in the semi-finals.

And when asked why Biggar wasn't taking kicks at goal, Boyd said: "He's carrying a little injury that's problematic for his goalkicking and it might go on for two or three weeks but we'll see how that comes along."

Saints were dealt a big blow during the second half as Tommy Freeman was forced off with a knee injury.

The 20-year-old full-back had earlier scored two tries in as many minutes to give his team the lead.

"He's got something wrong with his knee but it's way too early to tell," Boyd said.

"He'll go through a process and we'll find out early next week."
