RALLY pair Bill Douglas and Paul Ohren-Bird of East Midlands Rally Team had an outstanding class win with their very reliable Volvo 240GLT on the Pantastic Stages event at Swynnerton, North Staffordshire.
With Bill driving and Paul navigating the pair competed on ground covered with two inches of snow.
This quickly turned to ice in the sub-zero temperatures and although many competitors got into difficulty, Bill and Paul produced stage times that their class rivals could not compete with.
On stage 6 in deteriorating conditions they even caught up and overtook two other competitors. By stage 7, the event organisers considered conditions and failing light made it too dangerous to continue and the event was prematurely closed.
This resulted in Bill and Paul finishing an outstanding 14th overall and 1st in class with their nearest rivals 9 minutes 5 seconds behind.
"This was an excellent result for the team in such appaling conditions" said Paul.
"Bill drove brilliantly on the very difficult surface, keeping the car on the stages to set some good stage times".
Now East Midlands Rally Team is preparing to start the 2002 season with Angela Morris and Paul entering the Rally 2002 Championship with the Peugeot 205 1.6GTI.
The championship is held at venues in the Midlands and Southern England, finishing with a special event in Jersey.
