Myler says Saints were defensively ‘dumb’ in win over Wasps

Stephen Myler feels Saints were defensively ‘dumb’ against Wasps and has warned them they can’t afford to make the same mistakes at Clermont this weekend.

Myler and Co were given a sizeable scare by Dai Young’s men at Franklin’s Gardens on Friday night, falling 20-8 behind before recovering to claim a 52-30 victory.

Christian Wade waltzed in for a hat-trick, leaving Saints questioning just why they were so porous in a particularly open Aviva Premiership fixture.

And with a crucial Champions Cup quarter-final in France on Saturday, Myler knows he and his team-mates must come up with some answers.

“It was pretty frantic to be honest,” said the fly-half. “There was a lot of energy, a lot of loose ball, a lot of things we did poorly, but we’re obviously pleased to get the win.

“We’ve got a few things to work on because we can’t play like that this weekend and think we’re going to get away with it.

“I thought our discipline was very poor. At the start of the second half we gave away a couple of penalties and we were defending our tryline again.

“It was the opposite of what we wanted and it’s things like that which are in our control and we let ourselves down with.

“We were just being a little bit dumb, a little bit keen at times and there are certainly things we need to make better this week.”
