Myler keen to get back to rugby business for Northampton Saints

Stephen Myler says he can’t wait to simply focus on rugby after signing a new deal at Saints.

There had been plenty of speculation about the future of the fly-half, with Leicester Tigers looking to secure his signature.

But Saints made a concerted effort to keep the 28-year-old at Franklin’s Gardens and his new contract was announced on Wednesday.

Myler has been in good form this season, but he is now looking to push on after committing his future to Northampton.

“I always wanted to stay,” said the former Salford City Reds player. “It’s always a difficult time of year for clubs and players and as it stands now I’m very happy it’s all sorted.

“I can hopefully concentrate on rugby and I’m looking forward to bringing some silverware and success to Saints.

“There’s always speculation so I wouldn’t read into everything that’s been said, but what I would say is that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time since coming to the club in 2006.

“I’m hoping that I’m going to enjoy the next few years in the same vein and I’m genuinely excited about bringing some silverware that we all think we can challenge for.”

Myler has battled with Ryan Lamb for the Saints No.10 shirt this season, cementing his place as first-choice fly-half.

And he having Lamb, who is set to join Leicester this summer, as a rival has enhanced his game.

“It does have its difficulties, but by the same token you can’t expect to be the only fly-half at the club, especially one as big as this,” said Myler.

“What it does make you realise is that you’ve got to be on top of your game to be in the shirt, that’s been pretty consistent throughout the whole squad, not just my position.

“It does have difficulties if you’re not getting game time and I’ve always felt like when I’ve had a run of games the team’s benefited from that and I hope to continue that for this season and next.”
