Town ladies get off to good start

FOR the second season running Karen Barlow was called out of retirement to don the goalkeeping kit being the motivator from goal.

The town side started well with Kerry Moralee making runs down the right channel, linking well with Ronaldo Blyth who crossed to Angelina Bartlett whose shot was saved.

The opposition seemed to always be on the back foot with Donna Welsh and Madison Creaney making excellent tackles in defence.

Hayley Frost picked up the ball, drove down the left, found Zoe Smiley in the middle who weaved through players and slipped the ball towards goal for Donna Peasland to tap in.

The opposition tried to raise their game by working the ball between their two key central players but they were thwarted by Mandy Thompson and Steph Borthwick. Monica Lambden found herself in acres of space and had a good chance but the ball powered off the cross bar.

With the heat zapping players’ energy, manager Alex Meek began to roll the subs and brought a new level to the game. Amy Diment hit a long ball out of defence to Kerry, who found Monica, whose shot was on target this time.

With minutes ticking down to half-time the Daventry girls worked the ball around the field well. Mandy passed to Roni who picked up the ball well, drove around the back leaving Monica to get the last touch for her second of the game.

After a much-needed break to take on necessary fluids, Daventry soon upped their game once again with Ronaldo and Zoe having near misses.

Donna floated a ball, which was picked up by Ronaldo, who crossed it to Hayley who hit the target.

Rothwell tried to counter-attack at speed driving into the ‘D’ and putting pressure on Karen who made an excellent, but casual looking save.

The opposing team, were really struggling to find their form which allowed the town side many chances.

Captain Angelina scored soon after with a reserve stick tap-in thanks to a good build up which began with an excellent tackle from Steph.

The team was on a roll, with Monica completing her hat-trick with a reverse stick sweep.

This was a great start to the season taking maximum points and an impressive goal difference.
