Town ladies celebrate fine victory

DAVENTRY Ladies recorded a superby win against Kettering in the second round of the National Yetton Plate Competition.

Playing two rinks at home and two away, both home rinks thumped the opposition 67 shots to 24. These included a maximum count of eight on Judy Hicks’ rink on the last end.

And although going down on the rinks at Kettering the scores were very tight ensuring the win overall by 96-57.

Individual rink scores were: At home, June Gelder, Barbara Hutt, Jill Welch and Vicky Rushall 29 Margaret Everitt 8. Carol Kershaw, Iris Rolfe, Julie Spreadbury and Judy Hicks 38 Beryl Rylott 16.

Away at Kettering Sue Yates, Rhona Holland, Pat Symonds and Joan Watts 15 Margaret Silsby 18. Margaret Faulkner, Gill Wykes, Barbara Oliver and Brenda Bishop 14 Audrey Height 15.

They now play Peterborough on January 5 starting at 10am at both venues.

The mixed Thursday match was away at Rushden.

Despite winning on two rinks and tieing on another, Daventry lost 84-97.

George Clifton was captain for the day and led by example gaining the highest-winning rink for Daventry.

Rink scores were Alan Saunders, Margaret Carty, Brian Gelder and Adge Smith 9 D Jones 24. Rick Hayes, Mike Robins, Jim Round (playing his first game) and Alan Davies 19 L Wilmott 17.

A full six rinks competed for the annual men’s pairs Streeter Trophy which was won by Bob Worth and Duggie Mitchell with Alan Gardner and Michael Moulton, the runners-up.

In the club competitions the second round of the men’s singles is due to be completed by December 31 along with the first rounds of the mixed and men’s pairs.
