Nail-biting finishes

DAVENTRY men had a fine result against Solihull in their first Wessex league match of the season in the two rinks at home and two away format.

With three ends left Daventry trailed by 10 shots but when three rinks had finished Daventry’s remaining rink needed four shot for an overall win.

With Mike Harris and Ken Marshall at the front giving the rink a good start it was left to Rein Sach to trail the jack to hold two shots.

Then Terry Fuller in sublime form added another shot for a rink victory and to tie the match at 73-73.

Having won three of the rinks Daventry gain 10 points to Solihull’s 6.

The ladies were not so fortunate in the Mason Trophy game against Wellingborough losing 35-47. Rink scores were at home Sue Yates, Barbara Oliver, Judy Hicks and Vicki Rushall 11 Margaret Johnson 29. Away June Gelder, Sylvia Plant, Brenda Bishop and Joan Watts 24 Di Allen 18.

In this week’s friendly games the ladies travelled to Leicester for a triples match losing out 57-65 with the highest-winning rink going to Carol Kershaw, Mary Gillard and Joan Bodily 23-14.

The men entertained Abington and had a resounding win 110-78 with Reg Kershaw, Brian Robbins and Jim Milburn gaining the highest-winning rink 29-6.

The weekend saw two home games with Bletchley being the visitors on Saturday and going home with a 130-108 win with the best Daventry rink being Joan Bodily, Mary Gillard, Sue Pernyes and Peter Mercer 32-11 and on Sunday Daventry finished the week on a high note winning 74-65 against Chipping Norton with Hazel Wallage, Anne Smith, Jennie Mercer and Norman Langdon the highest rink winners at 22-9.
