THE winter season started with the Open Weekend and this year there will be 77 teams in various leagues throughout the week.

The first match was away to Barwell which ended in a win for the home side 127-108. Daventry’s highest winning rink was Ken Garlick, Margaret Carty Margaret Stevens and Stan Alton 21 J Upton 19. Other rink scores were Kath Alton, Brian Robbins Alan Davies and Norman Langdon 19 R Herbert 19.

Daventry Men got their season off to a flying start with an excellent home win against Northants Police winning 131-89. Captain John Sach was pleased with the teams performance as several less experienced bowlers were in the team. John welcomed Martin Dearsley for his first game and he played at number two in the highest-winning rink along with Ken Garlick, Alan Davies and George Clifton winning 39-12 against Bill Tapp.

Other rink scores were Peter Ashbrook, Rick Hayes, John Sach and Rien Sach 24 Peter Simmons 10. Bryon Tonks, John Shanahan, Ken Marshall and Derek Brewer 22 Mick Lee 12. In the over 60s double rink competition Daventry’s A team just got the better of Kingsthorpe B with a narrow 37-34 win.

Rink scores were at home Mike Starkey, Bob Humphris, Brian Jones and Bernard Spreadbury 17-18. Playing away Geoff Allen, John Worthington, Tony Dicks and Mick Worthington 20-16.

On Sunday Daventry travelled to Bromsgrove for the first round of the National Top Club Competition and returned with an excellent 10-6 victory.

The rink scores were Men’s Two Wood Singles Tony Dicks lost 16-14. Ladies’ Two Wood Singles Vicki Rushall won 20-6. Pairs Geoff Allen and Brenda Bishop lost 21-20. Triples Barbara Hutt, Terry Fuller and Mark Courtney won 19-16. Fours Julie Spreadbury, Sylvia Plant, Bernard Spreadbury and Mick Worthington won 30-5.

Also on Sunday a mixed team visited Kettering for a four-rink match and came away with a 70-53 win.

The highest-winning rink went to June Gelder, Jennie Mercer, Alan Davies and captain for the day Brian Gelder 22 J Everett 9.
