Mallinder: Recent defeats can fuel Saints’ bid for silverware

Jim Mallinder is hopeful that the misery Saints have felt during the past two weeks will inspire them in their pursuit of Aviva Premiership glory.

Heavy defeats at Clermont Auvergne and Exeter Chiefs have left Mallinder’s men battered and bruised.

But they remain six points clear at the top of the Aviva Premiership table with three games of the regular season to go.

They now have a two-week break before facing second-placed Saracens in a crucial league game at stadium:mk.

And Mallinder is confident recent defeats will ensure his side perform in that fixture and beyond as they look to retain their title.

“We should have done better at Exeter and now we’ve got three games to go,” said the director of rugby.

“We’re six points clear and we need to see if we can beat Saracens in Milton Keynes in two weeks’ time.

“We’ve got a bit of time to refocus now and get together.

“It was a quiet changing room after Sunday’s game because we don’t lose many and it’s not a good feeling, but hopefully it will inspire us to finish the season well.”
