Mallinder backs Saints star Wood to regain England place

Jim Mallinder is confident Tom Wood's next England cap won't be too far away as the flanker continues to shine at Saints.

Wood was one of the best players on the pitch once again on Saturday, driving his team to a crucial 26-11 victory against Sale Sharks at Franklin’s Gardens.

His presence during the Six Nations period has been hugely important for Saints, who have now won five of their past six games.

And Mallinder has been delighted with Wood’s contribution, backing the 29-year-old to add to his 42 England caps.

“He’s been outstanding consistently for us over the last few weeks,” said the Saints director of rugby. “That’s all he can do.

“Clearly he’d love to be playing down at Twickenham, but that’s not to be at the moment.

“All he can do is keep putting in performances like that and I’m sure his chance will come again.”
