O’Toole scored four times during March, helping to ensure that his team retained their unbeaten run, which now spans an incredible 18 matches.

The 27-year-old has been a key figure in Cobblers’ rise to the top of the table and he will now hope to help them win promotion, and possibly the title, this weekend.

Town can go up if they beat O’Toole’s former club Bristol Rovers and they would win the title if their three points are allied with Oxford United failing to win at Crawley Town.

And Wilder said: “John-Joe’s been outstanding for us and quite rightly should be nominated for player of the month.

“We’ll definitely look when this PFA team comes round because there will be a few of our players who should be in the team of the season.

“It was no surprise to see John-Joe nominated for the March award and he has to keep his head, but he’s done that this season very, very well and hopefully he can play a major part in a good team performance and the result we’re all after on Saturday.

“We want to make sure we gain promotion.”
