Top target Revell is an example to all, says boss Page

Alex Revell's superb early-season form has come as no surprise to Cobblers boss Rob Page, who has revealed the striker was his '˜top target' in the summer.

Revell swapped Milton Keynes Dons for Sixfields when he was handed a two-year Sixfields deal in June.

The frontman has enjoyed a strong career with the likes of Cambridge United, Brighton and Rotherham United, and he has made an instant impact at the Cobblers.

Not only has he scored four goals in 10 starts, but he has shown a willingness to work that is second to none.

He plays more like a 23-year-old than the 33-year-old he is, and Page says that is exactly what he was expecting when he signed Revell.

“We knew what we would be getting,” said the Cobblers boss. “Myself and Andy Melville, when we sat down in the summer and went through potential targets, he was the number one target.

“We knew that if we could get him in, we knew what he would bring to the team and the football club.

“Every fan has taken to him, and everybody knows why.

“I think as a player, and I spoke to the youth team after the West Brom game, and I said to them to ‘look at him’.

“I said ‘look at what the best players are doing, look at what Alex does’.

“And I’m not talking about scoring goals, I am talking about from a work-rate point of view.

“If you have that as standard, then you have a chance of making it in the game.

“Revs hasn’t fluked the career he has had, he has done it because of what he brings from an attitude point of view, and a work-rate point of view.

“And on top of that, he is going to score goals at this level.

“He is a threat, not only with his head, but with his feet as well. We have seen that and there was no better example of it than his goal in the play-off final (for Rotherham) at Wembley .

“He is capable of doing both, so we have got a good player and a great lad.”

Revell will once again lead the line at Chesterfield on Saturday, and that means more time on the bench for former Spireite Marc Richards and JJ Hooper, who has yet to start a league game since signing on loan from Port Vale.

And Page says the competition for striking places is driving all of the players on in training every day

“It has been frustrating for JJ Hooper as well, because he was playing when he was at Port Vale,” said the Cobblers boss.

“He has come in here and has been limited to his minutes, but when you have somebody like Revs, and Revs knows he is keeping somebody like JJ and Marc Richards out of the team, then it works both ways.

“One has to raise their game, and the other has to maintain their standards if not improve them.

“That is good for the changing room.”
