Taylor was a free agent after leaving the Turf Moor team at the conclusion of their promotion-winning Sky Bet Championship campaign.

He made a total of 38 appearances for Burnley after joining them on a free transfer during the summer of 2014.

The 34-year-old has also played for Luton, Portsmouth, Bolton and West Ham and will now hope to help Cobblers shine in Sky Bet League One this season.

“Matt is a big signing for us,” said Cobblers boss Rob Page.

“He has attracted a high level of interest from some Championship clubs over the last couple of months, but with our good location for him we have been able to convince him to make the move to Sixfields.

“The chairman deserves a lot of praise for helping us get this deal done. We always said we would be patient this summer to get the right players in, and Matty gives us options and has a wonderful left foot.

“He trained with us last week and really lifted training and he watched the game on Saturday from the stands and he can’t wait to get going.

“He has proven quality, he is a winner, he gives us something different and he will fit in well with the other players we have at the club.

“I am also looking for him to bring some of the younger players on with his experience.”
