Casey’s edged into the next round of the Northants FA Sunday Trophy with a 3-2 win over Rushden & Higham.

Stuart Clarke opened the scoring for Casey’s with a superb finish.

Rushden hit back to equalise, but Casey’s were back in front just before half-time, Clarke hammering home a penalty after a handball.

Casey’s attacked with real intent in the second half, and went 3-1 ahead when Leigh Roberts netted following a solo run.

But Rushden again hit back and made it 3-2.

This produced a tense ending to the game, but the back four and goalkeeper Jason Noel stood firm.

Casey’s travel to Yelvertoft on Sunday hoping to kick-start their league campaign, but it will be a difficult challenge.

In the Rugby and District League Division Two, Casey’s Reserves were 4-3 winners at The Bull of Rugby.

Casey’s took an early lead through the hard-working Alex Oconnor, but were 2-1 down at the break.

Casey’s drew level thanks to a spectacular overhead kick from Tony Burkett, only for Black Horse to again take the lead.

Burkett quickly made it 3-3 as he scored from close range and Casey’s nicked all three points when striker Rob Horne scored the winner late on.

Casey’s Reserves are at home to Webb on Sunday at Staverton Park (ko 11am).
