Striker Marquis looking forward to his Sixfields return

The Millwall loan man was signed last Monday and is already two games into his second spell at Northampton, but he is set to make his second home debut for Town on Tuesday night as they entertain AFC Wimbledon.

His two games to date have been on the road, at York City and Hartlepool United, but the 23-year-old is excited at the prospect of his Sixfields return.

The last time Marquis played in a home game for the Cobblers it was a fairly momentous one, as it was the final day of the 2013/14 season and the striker scored as Town beat Oxford United 3-1 to secure their Football League survival.

Asked if he was looking forward to playing in front of the Town faithful again, Marquis said: “Definitely.

“I can’t speak highly enough of them, and how much I enjoyed it last time.

“It is strange in a way that I am coming back with the team at the other end of the table, but I just remember the last day of the season against Oxford and the support we had that day when we stayed up.

“It was great, and I am pretty sure it is going to be like that in every home game between now and the end of the season.

“Most of them will be sold out, and it is going to be good playing back at Sixfields.”

Marquis is already off the goalscoring mark for the Cobblers, having netted in the 2-1 victory at York a week ago, and he hopes it is going to be the first of many with 13 games of the campaign to play.

He certainly anticipates getting plenty of chances in a Cobblers team that, Saturday at Hartlepool aside, has been a free-scoring unit all season.

“I played with Holmesy at Portsmouth, and I have played with Lee Martin as well,” said Marquis, who had only scored once all season prior to his close-range strike at Bootham Crescent.

“I know the quality Northampton have in wide positions and I am going to be getting service if I am playing.

“Whoever plays up front in this team will get service and it will be down to me to take the chances when they come along.

“The manager and Knilly have got the team playing really good, attacking football, and that suits attackers, who always like to hear that.

“I want to score some goals now between now and the end of the season and see where it takes me.”

Marquis may have only been back at Northampton for a little over a week, but it seems clear that it is a club he would like to stay at longer than the next two months of his loan spell.

“I am out of contract at Millwall at the end of the season and that is the main reason for moving, as I need to come here and play,” said Marquis, who has started the past two games for Town.

“It wouldn’t have been any good for me sitting on the bench at Millwall until the end of the season, so to come here now I can hopefully earn myself a contract.

“It is something I want to do, and if I can score goals, help the team, work hard and do what I normally do then we’ll see.”
