So close to Wembley but so far from reaching the next round

Wembley ran out 4-0 winners against Daventry in Saturday’s extra preliminary round.

With six players unavailable it was always going to be a tough ask at a club in step five. But their cause was not helped by a poor first half performance creating only one chance in the first half.

Wembley started very brightly and forced a save by George McCellan when the dangerous Joe Wright was through on goal.

Wembley pushed on with left back Charlie Weir and winger Calvin Kasirye going close.

Wembley’s breakthrough came in fortuitous circumstances when a clearance hit Wright’s back and looped over the stranded McCellan.

As the half wore on Wembley kept up the pressure and Weir should have done better with a free header as Daventry struggled to defend set pieces.

Wright rounded McCellan but was forced wide and the keeper got back to clear the ball off the line. But Wembley doubled their tally with Wright’s delicate chip over McCellan.

Daventry failed to concentrate from the restart and Jabir Lamba pounced on a defensive slip and finished well from the edge of the box to all but end the contest.

After the restart Lamba bagged his second goal with a header from ten yards.

A tactical switch by Arron Parkinson and Andy Marks saw Daventry come into the game more and their best chance fell to Adam Creaney who shot wide when clean through.

But Wright had a chance to complete his hat-trick late on only to see his shot again blocked by McCellan.
