York boss Worthington backs Cobblers for promotion push

Town finished in sixth place in league two last season and the expectation within the club and among its supporters is that the team will at least match that league placing this time around.

It is not a view shared among the bookmakers, who have made Fleewtood, with their vast playing budget, and Portsmouth, who are comfortably the best supported club in the division, the two favourites for the title.

But Worthington, who is good friends with Boothroyd and who worked alongside the current Cobblers boss when they were both in the employment of Norwich City, feels Northampton will be among the leading lights in league two this season.

“One thing we’ve got to learn is that we keep going right until the final whistle and play for 90 or 95 minutes, however long it takes,” said Worthington, who also led York to a win at Sixfields in the final month of last season.

“I thought over the course of the game we deserved to win, we created some chances and their keeper made several good saves.

“The effort and commitment of the players was tremendous and we needed that against a team that narrowly missed out on promotion last year.

“They won’t be too far away this season either and that makes it really pleasing for us to beat them.”
