Wilder delighted by Cobblers’ most complete performance of the season

Town were 4-2 winners at the Globe Arena, completely dominating the match from the moment Lawson D’Ath volleyed them into a 1-0 lead on 31 minutes.

That goal came from a pinpoint left-wing cross from the impressive Adams, who also had a big hand in the Cobblers’ three other goals.

He won possession and sent Dave Buchanan racing down the left wing ahead of the second through Sam Hoskins, was the man fouled for Joel Byrom’s free-kick for the third, and sent Alfie Potter clear down the right for the fourth scored by Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

He also set up a strong of other chances and had a couple of long-range efforts of his own that were well saved by Shrimps goalkeeper Barry Roche.

“Nicky was outstanding,” declared Wilder. “He has got four assists, and I think he is talking about how he should have had eight assists!

“But we won’t be greedy, as a win is a win, but it really was an outstanding performance.”

Asked if it was the most complete of the campaign, the Town boss said: ““Yeah, I think it is.

“We have been waiting for a few of them, but it is still early in the season.

“But the reason we brought Nicky to the club and into the team is for days like Saturday.

“He will be a little bit disappointed he’s not scored, but he was good.”

Once they had weathered a strong start from Morecambe, it was an exhilarating attacking performance from the Cobblers.

They were swift on the break and at times had the home team chasing shadows, with the negative being they should have scored more goals.

Another negative was the goals conceded, with Tom Barkhuizen netting with a free header from a corner, and Joel Byrom diverting a Kevin Ellison cross into his own net as he chased back to help his defence.

“We want to play, and we want to be solid at the back, so we were a little disappointed with the goals we have conceded,” said the Town manager.

“But I thought overall the team was solid, and we managed the game really well.

“When we broke the play up we passed it really well, and there spells there for 10 or 15 minutes when we really took the game away from Morecambe and could have scored at will, but we didn’t. We really went for the game and that could have been any score.

“Whether Morecambe weren’t very good, or we were excellent, we have a great result for ourselves.
