Wilder: Cobblers’ win at Morecambe was outstanding

Goals from Lawson D’Ath, Sam Hoskins, Joel Byrom and Dominic Calvert-Lewin secured an excellent win for the Cobblers, who could and should have won by more.

“That is an outstanding afternoon for us,” declared a beaming Wilder.

“We talked about that we don’t want to be a yo-yo side, and we didn’t want to waste the big effort from (beating Oxford) last week.

“It was an outstanding effort against Oxford, and we needed to back it up today, and we did that in style.”

Morecambe started the game strongly, but as soon as the Cobblers took the lead through D’Ath on 31 minutes there was only one team in the contest.

“You would expect them to be full of confidence after the run they’ve been on, and to come out of the traps quickly,” said Wilder.

“I thought the start was fairly even, and I don’t think we were particularly on the back foot.

“They possibly missed a chance at the back post early on, but we had chances too, and then as soon as we scored we took the game away from them.

“There was a spell in the second half where I have to say I was disappointed we didn’t add to our tally, and that’s not being greedy.

“It was a really dominant second-half performance, but I know that with Jim Bentley and his team here they will never give up, and they kept going.

“I was touch disappointed with the couple of goals conceded, but we have come away from home and scored four goals against a team bang in form, and that is a really good result for us.”

The Cobblers achieved the win without the services of skipper Marc Richards, who was rested and an unused substitute due to a slight side strain.

Town, who move up to eighth in the Sky Bet League Two table, are back in action next Saturday when they entertain leaders Leyton Orient.
