Toney reunion of ‘no relevance’ to Wilder as Cobblers prepare for Newcastle test

The teenager made the switch from Northampton to the Magpies earlier this month, and could be in line for a place on the bench against his former employers.

The player himself is obviously keen for that to happen, and said after the draw was made: “It’s a great draw for myself, up against the football club that I started at, so I’m delighted with it.

“I’d love to get a run-out and show what I can do but it’s the manager’s decision who he selects.”

But Wilder says he isn’t concerned if he comes up against Toney in the north east or not.

“It has no relevance to me if Ivan Toney is in their squad,” said the Cobblers boss.

“He has gone, and we wish him all the best. I shook his hand, and I rang him up and that was it.

“He now moves on with his career, and my full focus is on us.

“If Ivan does well after Tuesday then great, we’ll be happy and we’ll know we have played a part in a career that hopefully goes well.

“But nothing from me to him on the night. We will respect the opposition, whether it’s Ivan playing or anybody else.”

The Cobblers travelled to the north east on Monday.

There are no fresh injury concerns following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle, although Josh Lelan will miss the Newcastle game through suspension after he was sent-off for picking up two bookings against Argyle.

The youngster’s place in the team is set to go to new loan signing Adam Yates, who has joined the club for a month from Port Vale, while central midfielder Jason Taylor is available again after serving the one-match ban he received for his dismisal at Barnet last Tuesday.

Full-backs Brendan Moloney and Evan Horwood are both still missing, and likely to be keeping them company them in the treatment room is Ricky Holmes.

The winger suffered a back spasm in the warm-up at Barnet, missed the date with Plymouth on Saturday, and is struggling to shake the problem off in time for Tuesday.
