Taylor frustrated as Cobblers gift leaders Burton victory

Jason Taylor was a frustrated man after the Cobblers’ 3-1 defeat at Burton Albion on Saturday and admitted: “We need to be better than that”.

The Town midfielder praised the performance of the home side, who are one win away from claiming the Sky Bet League Two title, but he felt the Cobblers gifted them their three goals in the first half.

And he achoed his manager Chris Wilder’s thoughts that the first-half performance at the Pirelli Stadium was unacceptable.

“I don’t think Burton steamrollered us, I think we have gifted them goals, and as a team we shouldn’t accept that ourselves,” said Taylor, who last week signed a new two-year deal to stay at the Cobblers.

“We need to be better than that. We pride ourselves on trying to keep clean sheets, and we have given them three goals that they didn’t even have to work for.

“Mistakes have cost us, we didn’t do the right things, make the right decisions at the right time.

“We are far better than that, as you could see in the second half, but you can’t just turn up and be on it half the time, we have to be on it all the time.

“We had a go in the second half but the first half killed us, and killed the game.

“We tried and tried right until the end, but Burton are a good side, they are well organised, they work hard, and they do the ugly things without having to tell each other.

“That is why they have been successful, and congratulations to them.”

Town went in at half-time trailing 3-0, and although Lawson D’Ath did pull a goal back in an improved second-half showing, Taylor admitted there were a few harsh words shared in the Cobblers’ dressing room at the half-time break.

“The manager let us know what he thought at half-time, and as a group we let each other know,” said Taylor.

“That’s how it should be, because we are all men in that dressing room and people should be able to take the criticism.”
