The former Manchester United and England striker has endured a tough start to football management with his Stevenage team 20th in Sky Bet League Two having picked up just three wins from their opening 15 games.

And his misery continued at Sixfields on Saturday when goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Alfie Potter cancelled out Steven Schumacher’s first-half strike.

Stevenage had deserved their lead at half-time after dominating much of the first half, as noted by both Sheringham and Cobblers boss Chris Wilder, but Northampton produced a much-improved second half display to come away with the points.

Sheringham said afterwards: “I’m disappointed with the goals we conceded. I thought we played very well and felt like we were in control so to come away with a defeat is very disappointing.

“I think we deserved to go into half-time leading 1-0 but we let the other team in when we were in control of the game. We weren’t overly dominant but I felt we were the better team in the game and it’s very disappointing to come away with nothing.

“It’s a great goal from our point of view, probably not from theirs, but it’s a knock-down and he’s made it his own. It was a chance that could have gone either way but Schumacher got onto it and produced a good finish and we were delighted with that at that point.

“Neither keeper had a great deal to do. We didn’t really create enough chances. The one chance was when the ball went across the goal from the left-hand side and there’s no one getting in the box to finish it off, and then they go up the other end and score a second goal.

“That’s the disappointing thing because we were so close to going two up.

“Right at this minute, there’s not much we can take away from the game.”
