Northampton Town striker O’Donovan still happy to be put on the spot

The Irishman has been designated as Northampton’s penalty taker following the summer departure of Adebayo Akinfenwa, but he fluffed his lines in the 2-0 defeat at Southend United.

With the score at 0-0, the former Coventry City man saw his penalty saved, but O’Donovan insists the next time Town are awarded a penalty then he wants to take it.

“I still want to take penalties,” said O’Donovan, who will again lead the attacking line when Town travel to Bristol Rovers in Sky Bet League Two on Saturday.

“I am confident. I think at Southend I probably changed my run-up a small bit, but it was a good save.

“I hit the ball hard, but it was a good height for the goalkeeper.

“But it is just one of those things in football.

“You have to learn from your mistakes, and it certainly won’t affect my confidence in front of goal.”
