Dickinson is available on a free transfer after missing the entire of last season as he recovered from an operation to repair a broken ankle.

The 27-year-old is currently training at Vale Park in a bid to win a contract, and scored twice in the Valiants’ 9-0 friendly win at Norton United on Saturday.

Vale should be in the box seat to sign the player, who made his name with Stockport County but has also played for 11 other Football League clubs, and Northampton are yet to speak to his representatives.

But manager Aidy Boothroyd is a big admirer of the player and admits he would still like to sign another striker.

“Liam is at Port Vale at the moment and I’ve had no direct contact with him yet,” he said.

“He is a free agent and he’s one of a few players that we are looking at.”

Darren Carter became only the club’s second new addition of the summer when the central midfielder joined Ian Morris in signing on at Sixfields.

Goalkeeper Matt Duke has returned on a permanent deal and there have been contract extensions for Roy O’Donovan, Ben Tozer, Lee Collins and Kelvin Langmead.

But 10 players have left for pastures new, with Clarke Carlisle taking the total to 11 with his retirement.

The number of players coming in depends on several factors but Boothroyd says it currently stands at three.

“I’d like to add another striker and I think we may also need another central midfield player,” he said.

“We may also need a guy that can play centre-back and right-back and that will give us a good squad that can play in a variety of different positions.”
