Northampton boss Boothroyd unconcerned by poor form, and is certain the goals will flow

Town have lost their past three games in a row, a run in which they have failed to score and which has seen them slip to five points off the npower League Two top three.

They have only three matches left to play this season, with the next assignment a rearranged game against Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park tonight (Tues, 7.45pm kick-off).

Defeat there could even damage the team’s hopes of finishing in the play-off places, while a win would keep them in the automatic promotion frame.

Despite his team being in the midst of their worst run of league defeats this season, Boothroyd is confident Town can improve in the season’s final furlong.

“That’s why I employ an analyst, to tell us what we’ve done in certain games and give me details of specific things I’m looking for,” he said.

“What I have learned is that we are creating lots of chances. When I watch the games back I am seeing that and that will turn.

“We had Bradford on the back foot for a period of that game and we had Cheltenham completely on the back foot for all of the game against them, we just couldn’t score.

“That isn’t spin, we’ve done very well as a group and now it will be all about making sure everything is right for the final stretch.

“We’d all have taken the position we are currently in when the season started, we just need to make sure we finish the job off now.”

The back-to-back losses to Cheltenham and Bradford mean the Cobblers now have the worst away record in the division - Plymouth have the same record but a better goal difference - and Saturday’s loss to York mean Burton Albion now have the best home record.

Boothroyd was furious to end a 10-game winning streak with the 2-0 loss to the Minstermen but was keen to stress he is happy with the ‘bigger picture’ of the form at Sixfields.

“We’ve come to expect a win in every home game we play and that’s a testament to the team and the way we have been playing at Sixfields,” he said.

“It was disappointing to lose to York and we didn’t reach our usual high standards for a number of reasons, but to take 30 points from 33 isn’t too bad.

“It’s important to remain calm and stay focused on the job in hand regardless of whether we win, lose or draw.”
