Town drew the Magpies in the second round and will travel to St James’ Park in the week commencing August 24.

And with Premier League teams often giving younger players a chance to shine in the League Cup, Toney could get the nod against Northampton.

Having emerged from the Sixfields academy, he joined Newcastle for an undisclosed fee earlier this month.

And Toney was a keen viewer of Thursday’s draw, which was to throw up a meeting of real personal significance.

“What were the chances of that?” Toney told nufc.co.uk.

“I was watching the draw and as it started, I said to my friend ‘I bet we draw Northampton’. For some weird reason I just thought it might happen.

“When we got pulled out, my phone just went crazy with messages and Twitter.

“It’s a great draw for myself, up against the football club that I started at, so I’m delighted with it.

“I’d love to get a run-out and show what I can do but it’s the manager’s decision who he selects.”

The last time Cobblers played a Premier League side away from home in the League Cup, they beat Liverpool on penalties at Anfield in 2010.

And Toney said: “It won’t be easy.

“Sometimes playing against a league two side in the cup can be a harder game.

“It will be a really tough test but one that we will be ready for.”
