The 31-year-old played in the recent friendly matches against Peterborough United, Corby Town and a Stoke City development squad, doing enough to impress Town boss Aidy Boothroyd.

Amankwaah, who has amassed almost 350 career appearances, has earned a one-year deal at Sixfields with the option of a further 12 months.

And Boothroyd is pleased to have secured the former Exeter player’s signature ahead of the start of the new Sky Bet League Two season, which begins at York on Saturday.

“Kevin has impressed me during pre-season and the homework we have done on him is all positive,” said Boothroyd.

“He is exactly what we need. He has a presence, he is good size but he is a footballing full back.

“He knows all about league two and what is required.

“He is a promotion winner in the past and he is a good professional to be coming in to our dressing room.

“He is different to what we have and his arrival is a boost for us.”
