Town this week signed the Italian under-20 international from Sheffield United until the end of the season and he will go straight into their squad to play Bury on Saturday.

As well as being part of a potential play-off push, De Girolamo is confident his own technical style will suit the way Northampton want to attack teams in the final nine games of the campaign.

“I’m hoping to be able to express myself here,” he said. “I know that Northampton have been getting good results recently and the way they like to play suits my game.

“It’s a good playing surface and the gaffer has told me he wants me to get on the ball, to turn and to run at players, which is what I’m all about.

“I’ll be looking to get a few goals as well and it’s a spell I’m looking forward to.”

Town go to Gigg Lane four points off the top seven after slipping to a midweek defeat to Carlisle United but De Girolamo is confident the gap can be bridged.

“I definitely think we can get into the play-offs and that was another reason why I wanted to come here,” he said.

“It would be two or three extra games at the end of the season and there is also the possibility of playing at Wembley, which would be fantastic.”
