Town are now five points adrift of the top seven after taking just a single point from the Easter weekend double-header against AFC Wimbledon and Cambridge United.

And with five games to go, it looks a tall ask for them to book a place in the end-of-season shoot-out.

But Cresswell is refusing to give up hope and says he and his team-mates will give it everything in closing stages of the current campaign.

“Monday’s defeat (to Cambridge) was a massive blow, but we need to pick ourselves up and go again because it’s not over until it’s over,” said the centre-back.

“Until it’s mathematically impossible we’re going to give it everything.

“We gave it everything on Monday and it wasn’t enough but hopefully on Saturday it will be.”

Town travel to Stevenage this weekend, knowing a win is a must as they bid to make up some ground.

Stevenage currently occupy sixth spot and can be caught, with Cresswell hoping Cobblers’ fan power can push them to a vital three points.

“It could be huge for us,” he said. “I think plenty of our fans will be there.

“They saw on Monday and during the past few weeks they effort and the drive is there.

“You can really see the support really ignites the lads and they push forward from it.

“Stevenage will be looking for three points to keep us away and we’ll be looking for three points to get ourselves back in there.

“Hopefully we’ll get a massive crowd behind us and put a big performance in.”
