Cobblers striker Toney hoping he can stay on a goal roll
After a spell of just one strike in 17 games stretching from December to April, the teenager has suddenly hit form again, scoring in the 1-1 draw at Oxford United on Tuesday, and then again in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Cheltenham.
The opener against the Robins took Toney’s season tally to a more than respectable 10 goals, and will have yet again alerted the scouts up and down the country tracking the youngster’s progress.
Toney very nearly left for Sky Bet Championship side Wolves for a fee in excess of £500,000 in the January transfer window, and it is expected there will be more interest in the player from bigger clubs this summer.
But Toney isn’t letting such things concern him.
“Goals attract other teams, and I am just lucky to be scoring them,” said Toney, who only turned 19 last month.
“I am here at Northampton, so I will make the most of them here, and wherever I end up, I end up.
“I am happy here, so it wouldn’t bother me if I stay or go.”
It was this time last year that Toney really burst on to the scene, scoring twice in the Cobblers’ penultimate game of the season - in a 3-0 win at Dagenham - and then netting again in the final-day 3-1 win over Oxford United.
Those two wins in the final two games of the campaign ensured the Cobblers avoided relegation to the Conference, and Toney has called on his team-mates to repeat the trick this season to try and get into the play-offs.
Town still have an outside chance of finishing in the top seven as they are four points behind with two games remaining against leaders Burton Albion and third-placed Wycombe Wanderers, and Toney said: “I’m sure everybody remembers last season when we were dead and buried, and then we stayed up.
“So hopefully we can do it again with the play-offs.
“I seem to start scoring towards the end of the season, so hopefully I can get a few more goals in the next two games.
“We have two massive games coming up, with Burton away and then Wycombe at home.
“The lads have all played in big games, and we are ready for these and hopefully we can get the three points from both games.”
