The Cobblers striker was left out of the win at Shrewsbury Town a week ago and only played 40 minutes of Tuesday night’s win over Portsmouth at Sixfields.

The club have managed the problem to date but Richards remains in discomfort and further action will be taken.

“We’re going to have a look at it and then speak to him to decide what he wants to do,” confirmed manager Chris Wilder.

“He’s going to have a scan to see if there’s anything there. He’s the type of lad that always wants to play and he’s been fantastic for us so it would be a blow to lose him.”

Richards is the leading goalscorer in Sky Bet League Two this season with 17 goals and has been Northampton’s most consistent performer to date following his summer move from Chesterfield.
