Cobblers players not fazed by possibility of protest, says Buchanan

A peaceful protest is being planned by frustrated Northampton fans, who are desperate for their fears to be allayed by chairman David Cardoza.

But left-back Buchanan says he and his team-mates can’t afford to think about what happens in the stands as they bid to beat in-form Oxford at Sixfields.

“To be honest, I don’t take any notice of what goes on off the pitch - that’s not my job,” said the former Preston North End player.

“I’m paid to turn up on a Saturday afternoon and a Tuesday night and all I try to focus on is giving 100 per cent when I get out there.

“When it’s matchday, there’s three points on offer and that’s all the lads focus on.

“The fans have been different class for us this year. They’ve come in their numbers to Barnet and Newcastle and they’ve supported us.

“When we’re giving sloppy goals away, they’re allowed a moan.

“But what I would say is that Saturday’s a big game, Oxford are going to bring a lot of fans, the gaffer used to manage them, there’s a few players here who used to play for them and I’d say to the fans to get behind us.

“We’ve lost a few games, but every one of us is trying to turn it around.”

And Buchanan believes everyone at the club has to stick together as Cobblers look to secure three points this weekend.

“As a footballer, you want this place rocking every week and that’s what the town wants as well,” he said.

“If we’re doing our jobs on the pitch and we’re at the right end of the table, the fans will be here. That’s the way I see it.”

When asked for his message to digruntled Cobblers supporters, Buchanan said: “My message would be ‘you’re all Northampton Town supporters and when we win, we win together’.

“We’re all in it together and if we lose, we lose together.

“Ultimately, come matchday, we’re trying to win for ourselves and our fans.

“Hopefully they can get behind us the way we want them to.”
