The 32-year-old was not named among the substitutes for the game at York City on Saturday, with just six players making the bench and not the permitted seven.

Artell was signed on a two-year deal last summer after leaving Crewe Alexandra but an Achilles injury saw him sidelined for three months, after which he was loaned to Wrexham until the end of the season.

Matt Heath played at centre-back alongside Lee Collins at Bootham Crescent and while that player is only on a week-to-week contract, the club do not require Artell to leave before he can be offered something longer term.

“It’s not a case of one in and one out but Dave’s name has been circulated,” confirmed Boothroyd. “We’ll have a chat and see if there’s anything come in from his end.
“If there is, then perhaps there will be a little bit of money to bring someone else in.

“While I might be looking for one player this week, it might change next week because different players might become available.”
