Boss Boothroyd to make decisions on Cobblers trialists in ‘next few days’

Cobblers boss Aidy Boothroyd has confirmed he will make decisions over the fate of his four on-trial players in the next few days after three of them scored in a friendly win at Cogenhoe United.

Lateef Elford-Alliyu hit four at Compton Park in a 6-0 win that also saw midfielder Gary Deegan and central defender Darren Purse on target.

Combined with JJ Hooper’s hat-trick at Sileby Rangers on Saturday, the decisions are unlikely to be easy ones for Boothroyd to make.

He must also take into consideration the fact that club captain Kelvin Langmead will have an exploratory operation on his knee this week, which could hasten his need to make a signing in defence, an area he had previously said he was happy with.

“I was very happy with all of the trialists, three of them scored and I was pleased with all of them,” he said.

“I know I can’t keep them hanging around forever so decisions will be made on them in the next few days.

“Peterborough is our next big test and we’ll look at how they perform against them, because they are a good side.

“We need to take it to the next step. We’ll get tested a lot more without the ball in that game than we have been so far.”

Town’s 6-0 win at Cogenhoe and the 5-1 triumph at Sileby Rangers mean the team has scored 11 goals in their two friendly matches so far this summer, albeit against opponents from the world of local part-time football.

Boothroyd was pleased with the standard of opposition provided by Cogenhoe, especially as the hot summer means he has been unable to put the physical demands on his players that he would like to.

“I’m really pleased, I like to play our local teams and see if we can help them get some revenue through the gate,” he said.

“It was a competitive game and it was difficult because they swarmed all over us.

“Our fitness levels told in the end but it was a good match and we’re grateful we can come here and be treated as well as we have been.

“It’s good to be playing games because with the grounds being as hard as they are I’m not able to push the players as hard as I would like.”
