Boothroyd: ‘I would be worried if we were top of league two now’

Town currently sit third from bottom after three defeats from their first four league games.

And while the fact only three points have been accrued may worry some, Boothroyd, true to character, remains philosophical.

Ahead of Saturday’s game at Bristol Rovers (ko 3pm), he was asked whether fans who have vented their worries about early-season results were right to do so.

“I tend not to use the word fans because I think fans is short for fanatical,” said Boothroyd.

“Fanatical people tend to get massive highs and massive lows. That can be dangerous.

“The last thing you need is a chairman who is a fan, you want someone who is a supporter.

“Supporters stick with you if they rate you, trust you, let you do your job and try to understand what you’re trying to do.

“I don’t think anyone expects us to pull up any trees early on and to be blunt and perfectly honest, if we were sitting top of the league right now I would be a little bit worried because everyone would be expecting us to stay there.

“You know you’re going to go through a difficult period. Maybe we’re having our difficult period early on, having said that we’re only a few points off automatic and a few points off the play-offs and a few off relegation so it’s still very early days.

“I think our lot (the Town supporters), in general, are very sensible people. You get the odd person but we all have to work with them don’t we? We just have to get on with it.”

Boothroyd today strengthened his squad with the signing of central midfielder Matty Harriott on contract until the end of the season.

Harriott has previously played for Sheffield United and Luton Town.
