Boothroyd happy with strength and depth of Northampton Town squad

Town received Chris Hackett and Clive Platt back to full fitness last week and although Hackett will serve a one-game suspension for his sending-off at Southend, the squad is in reasonable shape at present.

Club captain Kelvin Langmead is due back in November, Alex Nicholls is scheduled to return in January and Lewis Hornby’s back issue is ongoing.

Those three are the only injury absentees, and despite missing them Boothroyd suggested he may not make any more signings before the transfer window closes on August 31.

“I never say never but I’m quite pleased with what we will have when everybody is fit,” said the Cobblers boss.

One player on which Boothroyd is quite sure is Blyth, who scored on his debut against Newport County but had a much quieter afternoon at Southend on Saturday.

“We would definitely look at extending his (Blyth’s) loan because he can be a good player for us,” confirmed Boothroyd.

“I don’t think his fitness levels are where they can be at the moment but that’s full-time football.

“We are finding out what he’s all about – the biggest stumbling block for young players is consistency.

“Until they find their Football League legs it can be difficult for them to go every week but I am pleased with what he’s done for us so far.

“He’s a little bit different to what we’ve got and he gives us a bit of menace up front.”
