Boothroyd confident Northampton Town’s away form will improve

Town have the best form in league two, having amassed 29 points from their 14 games at Sixfields this year.

Over a 46-game season that form would yield 95 points - enough for the title last time around.

But away from home it is a starkly different story. Only 10 points have been gleaned from 11 journeys around the league two outposts - over a full season that would equate to 41 points, and 23rd in the 2011/12 league two standings.

Such facts are not lost on Boothroyd, who accepts things need to improve if the team’s quest to hit the top seven is to be completed.

“We need our away form to improve and I think it has in the past four games,” said Boothroyd, whose team have a chance to rectify their away form when they play at Chesterfield on Saturday.

“I think we’ve found a way of playing that suits us and that gives the opposition problems.

“We’re on a nice little run and we’re in a nice position.

“Lots of the teams around us have staked a claim for that top seven and we’re still a team that is improving.

“We know we can get better and we’re four points off automatic with a game in hand on some but those are words that are easy to say.

“The games over the second half of the season are important.

“We play a lot of the teams around us and they will be looking to finish in the top seven - if we can knock those teams off and take points off them, then put ourselves in there towards the end of February then it’s going to be a really exciting season.

“The progress that has been made by the players does need to be acknowledged but at the same time we haven’t done anything yet and until we do we just need to stay nice and calm and persistent.”
