The powerful centre-forward, who was left out of the starting line-up for Saturday’s npower League Two play-off final, posted what read like a goodbye on social networking site Twitter.

He stated: “I want to thank the staff, players and especially the FANS for making my time at NTFC memorable, it was special. God bless u all #BMO.”

And he added, in a second Tweet: “I did not choose to leave Northampton but I whole heartily wish Northampton fc all the very best in the future major luv #BMO.”

Akinfenwa’s contract at Sixfields expires this summer, one of 12 players whose deals will run out at that time.

The 31-year-old scored 17 goals for the Cobblers in the past season but only notched three times from the first week of December until the end of the campaign, and went on a 15-game drought that ended with the play-off final.

His tally for the season takes Akinfenwa’s career total at Northampton to 74 goals in 153 first-team starts.

The club confirmed on Tuesday that captain Kelvin Langmead has signed a two-year contract and they are expected to confirm their retained list for next season by the close of play on Wednesday.
