No place like home for cup hopefuls

LEADING Southern League Premier Division clubs came up smelling of roses when the draw was made for the last 16 of the Red Insure Cup.

Daventry Town take on Stourbridge in the West Midlands on January 18.

Among the top seven clubs in the Zamaretto League, only leaders Truro City have been knocked out of the League Cup competition so far. The other six have all picked up home draws with the Glassboys due to entertain Ady Fuller’s men a week on Tuesday.

Stourbridge are currently seventh in the top flight although goals have been in short supply with top scorer Ryan Rowe having found the net only seven times so far in league and cup matches.

Holders and cup favourites Cambridge City will be at home to Central Division newcomers North Greenford United while second-placed Salisbury City entertain Chippenham Town.

Leamington will receive Hednesford Town, Sholing go to Cirencester and there is an all top-flight contest between Windsor and Eton and Hemel Hempstead.

In the West Country, Clevedon face Taunton while the draw is completed by Ashford Town’s game against in-form Slough Town.

The pairings would suggest that the draw was again regionalised. Five matches will go ahead next Tuesday with the games at Cambridge, Cirencester and Stourbridge following a week later.

Daventry Town who are already otherwise engaged next week with a Hillier Cup tie against Cogenhoe, have so far beaten Brackley Town (3-2 after extra-time), Woodford United (4-1) and Bedworth United (1-0) in the Red Insure Cup.

Tom Berwick scored twice in both of the first two cup ties with Tom Fountain getting the only goal in the twice-postponed game at Bedworth.

Further progress might depend upon whether or not the Glassboys field a full first team.
