County were handed a 4-1 Rodney Parade thumping by promotion-chasing Bristol Rovers on Saturday, and the Northern Irishman admitted things won’t get any easier against a Northampton side sitting 11 points clear at the top of the table.

But Feeney is confident his team will rise to the challenge, just as they did at Portsmouth 10 days ago where they stunned Pompey and won 3-0.

“The games don’t get any easier, but that is probably better for us,” said Feeney.

“It’s a good game for us to go to Northampton because we have proved we can compete against anyone.

“These are the games that you want as players, and it’s good we have no game on the Tuesday, so we will get the boys recovered well and are looking forward to a good game.”

Newport have endured a hectic spell as they play catch-up following a spate of postponements.

Saturday’s defeat to Rovers was their seventh game in the space of 21 days, with the south Wales outfit managing to win three, lose three and draw one of thos fixtures.

Feeney admitted his team did look jaded at the weekend, but that he hopes they will be back ‘on song’ at Sixfields.

“I thought we looked a wee bit leggy (against Bristol Rovers),” said Feeney.

“It is tough with the amount of games we have had because I am a believer in not changing things too much, as I like to get a wee bit of momentum.

“But we will get the players recovered and hopefully we will be on song on Friday.”
